Course Description

The UNC motto serves as a springboard for this course.

Latin is dead. Or is it? Latin, in fact, is at the heart and soul of the Romance languages, English, science, law, medicine, astronomy, and school mottoes, to name a few.

This course will cast light (lux) on basic Latin history and concepts, offering a liberating (libertas) view of a language that is very much alive. The class motto is: Non pro schola, sed pro vita – not for school, but for life!

About the Instructor

Gregory Janicke is an artist, author, and international teacher. He served as a journalist at The Kansas City Star, then turned an eye to teaching. During his time as a language instructor in Casablanca, Morocco, he wrote and illustrated a sci-fi/fantasy series. Janicke has studied Latin since grade school and has taught the language to students of all ages. His podcast “Latin Whimsy with Magister J” has garnered an international audience.
