Course Description

This workshop, presented by the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at UNC-Chapel Hill, provides a detailed introduction to the FHIR standard used to capture, integrate, and exchange clinical data for research purposes. The NIH and other organizations that deal with this data increasingly recommend the use of FHIR as a standardized and reliable way to structure and transfer data. As this increasingly becomes the best practice and the gold standard, what do organizations need to know? And how do they integrate FHIR into their apps and processes?

According to the NIH:

“Once research is approved and compliant with human subjects protections, the FHIR format can accelerate the use of clinical data for research. FHIR is a standardized way of transmitting health data from one health information system to another through an application programming interface (API). It is being widely promoted and adopted for use in clinical care. In addition, FHIR provides a way to structure data generated from research in a manner that protects patient privacy and fosters interoperability and interchange of both research and clinical data. FHIR benefits from relative ease of implementation, availability of open source implementation tools, considerable industry support, and an American National Standards Institute consensus development process. It is also compatible with analytic resources used in biomedical research, such as R and Python.”

Learner Outcomes

Participants will leave with a solid understanding of what FHIR is, what it does, its limitations/scope, and its role in health informatics today. Although we will review some code, this workshop is designed to be appropriate for all roles and levels of expertise.

Location and Parking

The workshop will take place at the Health Sciences Library room 307 on campus at UNC-Chapel Hill. Workshop attendees should park in the Dogwood Parking Deck near UNC Hospitals, and will receive a parking pass during the workshop to validate parking.

About CHIP

The Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) is an interdisciplinary research and training program that plays a key role in fulfilling UNC-Chapel Hill's commitment to improving human health through health informatics research, data sharing, development, and education. CHIP draws faculty, health care professionals, and students from across the UNC campus to conduct basic and translational research and to offer graduate training in health informatics for scientists across the disciplines and for clinicians in medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, and pharmacy. Learn more at https://chip.unc.edu.
